The Question Every Growing E-commerce Brand Asks

After managing migrations in both directions, Magento 2 to Shopify Plus and Shopify to Magento 2, I can tell you: there is no universally "better" platform. The right choice depends on your business model, technical team, and growth roadmap. Here's the honest breakdown.

Total Cost of Ownership (3-Year Estimate)

Shopify Plus

  • Platform fee: $2,300/month (up to $800k GMV): scales with revenue above that
  • Apps: $500–$2,000/month for a typical enterprise app stack
  • Development: lower ongoing cost: most customizations are theme-level
  • Hosting: included
  • 3-year TCO estimate: ₹80L–₹1.5Cr

Magento 2 Open Source (Self-hosted)

  • Platform licence: free (Open Source) or $22,000–$125,000/year (Adobe Commerce)
  • Hosting (AWS): ₹80k–₹2.5L/month depending on scale
  • Extensions: ₹2L–₹8L one-time for a full production stack
  • Development: higher: requires PHP/Magento expertise
  • 3-year TCO estimate: ₹60L–₹2.5Cr

Customization Depth

Magento 2 wins decisively here. It is open source PHP: you can modify any part of the system: pricing logic, checkout flow, catalogue rules, admin workflows, integration architecture. Nothing is off-limits.

Shopify Plus allows significant theme customization and has a powerful app ecosystem, but core checkout logic (outside Checkout Extensions) is locked. If your business requires deeply custom checkout flows, complex pricing rules, or unique catalogue structures, Magento 2 is the only real option.

B2B & Wholesale Features

Magento 2 B2B (Adobe Commerce)

  • Company accounts with hierarchy
  • Shared catalogues with customer-group pricing
  • Negotiable quotes
  • Purchase orders with approval workflows
  • Credit limits

Shopify Plus B2B

  • B2B on Shopify (launched 2022): company profiles, custom pricing, net payment terms
  • Good for simpler wholesale models; less flexible than Magento 2 B2B for complex hierarchies

Winner for complex B2B: Magento 2. For simpler wholesale + D2C combined: Shopify Plus is faster to market.

Performance & Scalability

Shopify Plus handles infrastructure automatically: you never worry about scaling for Black Friday. Magento 2 on AWS requires proper architecture (Varnish, Redis, RDS read replicas, auto-scaling) but gives you complete control over performance tuning.

For most businesses under ₹50Cr GMV, Shopify Plus performance is excellent out of the box. For ultra-high traffic (millions of SKUs, flash sales, complex catalogue) Magento 2 with proper infrastructure can outperform.

When to Choose Shopify Plus

Worth testing against what you would actually use rather than against a revenue threshold, which is most of what Shopify consulting is for.

  • D2C brand with standard product catalogue and checkout
  • Team without dedicated PHP/Magento developers
  • Speed to market is the priority
  • International expansion with multi-currency/multi-language via Shopify Markets
  • Social commerce (Instagram, TikTok Shop integrations are seamless)

If that list describes your business and you are currently on Magento, the move is a separate decision from the platform comparison, with its own cost drivers and its own ways of going wrong. What a Magento to Shopify migration actually involves covers those before you commit to one.

When to Choose Magento 2

The honest version of this list is that the complexity has to be real. If it is, these are the conditions Magento earns its operating cost under, and testing that properly is what Magento consulting is for.

  • Complex B2B, wholesale, or multi-store architecture
  • Deep customization requirements: unique pricing, complex catalogue rules
  • Ownership over code and data (no vendor lock-in)
  • Existing Magento 1/2 ecosystem and team
  • Headless architecture with full control over the GraphQL API

Still unsure which way this goes for your business? The decision usually turns on details a comparison article cannot see: the catalogue, the integrations behind it, and what the current platform is actually costing you to run. If you are weighing the move specifically, the Magento to Shopify migration decision sets out the cost drivers and the cases where staying put is the better answer. If the question is broader than one platform, an eCommerce technical audit puts the findings in writing and ends with a recommendation rather than a proposal.

What next

This is the general shape of it. What is actually happening on one particular store takes looking at that store, which is what the audit is for.
